Block Print Workshop Osaka @babo vintage report🎤

ブロックプリントワークショップ大阪@babo vintage レポート🎤

Recently, we held a block printing workshop at babo vintage on March 29th (Sat) and 30th (Sun), 2025.

First of all, what is block printing?

Block printing is a traditional Indian fabric dyeing technique used in the clothing and items of our brand SUKOBURU. Its history is said to date back to pre-Christian times. Unfortunately, however, the number of artisans is decreasing year by year due to a lack of successors.

The owner of the block print studio that I have been working with for many years also
"The work is hard and dirty, and block printing is done by people and families of the Chippa caste, but today's younger generation doesn't want to take over the business, even if they are born into that caste."
He said,

Even so, block-printed fabrics, which are produced entirely by hand, have a warmth and unique beauty. It is an important traditional technique that we hope will continue to be passed down for generations to come.

This time, we asked local artisans to create original SUKOBURU woodblock prints so that people could enjoy block printing in a casual way. We held a workshop in conjunction with the POP UP!

Scenes from the block printing workshop

-People who often wear block-printed products and want to try making their own -Parents who want to give their children a unique experience -People who are learning dyeing techniques -People who want to have fun with friends while experiencing block printing

People with a variety of goals participated.

Despite the lively atmosphere, when it was time to concentrate on their work, everyone worked seriously and silently.

The photo above was sent to us by a customer after participating (Thank you very much).
The big wooden block was a collaborative effort between the older sister and younger brother! It was so cute.

↑The handkerchief on top is made by the mother, and the one on the bottom is made by her child.

I forgot to take pictures a lot, so I wasn't able to capture all the works, but here are some of the works that were produced.

Each piece was unique and beautiful, depending on the amount of effort put into it, their mood at the time, and their own individual personalities.

Once you finish printing, you naturally develop a deep respect for block-printed products and the artisans who make them.

There are things that you can't understand just by looking at them, but by actually experiencing them, you may have made new discoveries.

Above all, I was really happy that everyone enjoyed working on it!
